“Tower of Babel ” is a series of scale-drawings of hypothetical coin buildings made from different currencies.
Mimicking an advert in a magazine or a mail order catalogue entry, the drawings directly address the concept of value – what we attribute to objects and artworks, and possessions in general – and the utopia of creating monetary unions and shared wealth.
Tower of Babel I (2006) Is made of British Pounds and pence, amounting to a total of £ 9.99.
Tower of Babel II (2009) Is made of Euros and cents, amounting to a total of Euros 9.98. This work was exhibited in the group show ‘Art/Value/Currency’ at The Pigeon Wing, London and New York (2009/10).
Tower of Babel III (2010) is a reduced version of Tower of Babel II. It was created for the group show ‘Agency @The Agency’, London 2010, where we were asked to reduce existing works of 40% in order to fit in the gallery space. As my drawing was already small, I decided to reduce the work conceptually, so the tower shrank down to an amount of Euros 5.99.
Tower of Babel IV (2014) is made of obsolete Italian Liras.
Tower of Babel V (2023)is a new version of the Euros and cent tower amounting to a total of Euros 9.98, in large scale. This work was specifically made for the III Biennale of Drawing in Malaga, ‘Las Huellas del Dibujo’.
